It's spring now! Also I refuse to give up on this blogging format even though I only remember to do it half the time!

Operation be-less-of-a-miserable-bastard

A few days ago I posted about my plans to extract myself from my grief hole. I am pleased to report that so far it's been going alright!

I started working on one of my books again, which has felt like a big relief. I think I was scared I wouldn't be able to pick up where I left off, but so far what I've been making is... not perfect, but I'm comfortable enough with it for a first draft. (As a digression, I'm never really sure how to talk about my writing projects on here – part of me thinks I should share more about my OCs and the plots and stuff, but then I worry about them getting scraped by AI or some shit before I even publish anything. Also I still need to get over my embarrassment at being like "check out these people I made up and think about all the time!!!")

My other big goal was to get back into archery. Yesterday I finally went back to the range and shot some incredibly ropy rounds at 30 metres. By the end I was at least consistently hitting the target sheet, if not the target itself, so that felt like progress. My best round was an uninspiring 37 (9, 7, 7, 6, 6, 2), which was also the only round I shot where every arrow actually scored.

I had to stop for the day because I was struggling to draw the last arrows of each round. It doesn't help that I bought stronger limbs than I was used to and then immediately did not shoot or do any other strengthening exercise for like two months. So it makes sense that I'd be a bit feeble.

Oh well. The main point was to just go in the first place, which I did. It'll come back the more I keep doing it.

Where the hell have you been, loca?

I convinced my partner to watch all the Twilight movies with me this week. I'd only ever seen the first one before and I wanted to share the magnificence of the baseball scene. After that, we figured we may as well keep going.

I feel like Twilight's been on a bit of a journey over the last decade and a half. It blew up and was adored and reviled in equal measure, and then the backlash itself got a bit of a backlash, with people arguing that it wasn't that bad and things that are beloved by teenage girls often receive a disproportionate amount of vitriol.

That last argument is definitely one I agree with in a broader sense. Some people are all too keen to shit on something that was never really for them in the first place! Mind your own business!

But as someone who was a teenage girl when the first films came out, and who actively consumes (and even writes!) paranormal romance... these movies absolutely suck lmao. I had a fun time watching them though. I did briefly consider becoming Team Jacob just because the first 45 minutes of New Moon made me think, "What a nice, age-appropriate young man," but that went out the window very quickly with... basically everything else Jacob does. So consider me Team Edward, I guess.

The original film remains my favourite but Breaking Dawn Part 1 is the runner-up because it's the most insane. I think all of the sequels would have been improved by more baseball, really. Or maybe some other sports. Vampire cricket. Vampire ice hockey.

Save me, pop music

The new underscores album U is out and it's really good! I have some mixed feelings comparing it to Wallsocket – it's definitely much tighter and more consistent, but also feels a lot less ambitious in scope. Less weird, more laser-focused on making bops. In terms of initial listening experiences, basically U was a "hell yeah" and Wallsocket was a "holy shit".

But I would wholeheartedly recommend anything underscores makes because I think she's an actual pop genius, and U grows on me more every time I listen to it. Now go listen to "Tell Me (U Want It)" and have a great time.

I'm also very excited for Slayyyter's new album THE WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA next Friday. I've really enjoyed the singles so far, and if the rest of the songs are just as good I'll go absolutely feral.

I decided to make a new section of the site where I just recommend things to you. Kind of like reviews, but only positive ones, I guess. I'm still farting around with the design but hopefully it'll turn up soon. So there'll be some albums on there, but also films or books or anything I like and think other people should check out. (Somehow this is different from the I'm Going To Be So Annoying About This section. I don't know how. They might end up merging.)
